In 1967, the city of Calgary became the center of Canada's ninth province. The name 'Calgary' comes from a local Indigenous meaning 'crooked creek.' Although it's famous for its winters, Calgary is a thriving city during the rest of the year. It has a mild climate and plenty of space to grow. In fact, the city boasts the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada: 45 degrees Fahrenheit in RECENT YEARS. When summer arrives, the city enjoys similar weather to that of other parts of the province; they just don't experience as many sunburns. The hottest months are July and August with an average temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit. After decades of consecutive population growth, Calgary still experiences an urban heat island effect during this time. The city was founded in Canada's centennial year and is named after Scottish lender James Henry Stephen Clare by the University of Calgary in 1912. At one point, it was Canada's largest city by population, but now ranks third after Toronto and Vancouver. The population continues to grow thanks to an influx of immigrants and baby boomers moving to town. Many new residents settle in northeast Calgary for its lax building regulations and cheap Home prices- at times lower than Edmonton's prices. Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen hails from this city; his birth is commemorated annually with a candlelight vigil held on his birthday known as 'Cohen on Cohen.' He also wrote 'Hallelujah,' which is popularized by singers like Jeff Buckley and Otis Taylor Jr., and is considered one of the most performed musical works in history, having been performed by over 250 artists worldwide. Despite its notable aspects, there are some drawbacks to living in Calgary. The winters can be extremely harsh and there aren't many job opportunities in this industrial sector during the summer months either. If you're willing to put in effort during cooler months, however, Calgary makes for a great place to live.
